Her Story

About Marilyn

Marilyn Robinson is a registered nurse with more than 35 years of experience in hospital settings, beginning her healthcare journey at age 13 through volunteer work. She started her professional career as a nurse’s aide and unit clerk before becoming an EMT and advancing into nursing roles in emergency room and medical-surgical care. Her career has been shaped by a strong commitment to patient care and a desire to serve others, influenced in part by her sister and aunt, who were also healthcare professionals.

Since 2015, Marilyn has served as a BSN, RN at UConn Health, bringing extensive clinical experience to her work. She spent 16 years in emergency room care, an experience she considers one of her most significant professional achievements because it provided her with valuable training in both medical-surgical and critical care. After leaving emergency room work in 2021, she transitioned into auditing private-sector group home nurses in Connecticut’s West Region, applying her clinical knowledge and attention to standards in a different area of healthcare.

In addition to her nursing career, Marilyn is passionate about mentoring and supporting the next generation of nurses. Through Robinson Learning Company, she has developed study guides and cheat sheets designed to help nursing students prepare for and pass the NCLEX examination, and she has authored educational materials based on her professional experience. She also holds credentials as a notary and loan signing agent and has pursued entrepreneurial interests, including a wholesaling business. Through her diverse professional experiences, Marilyn continues to combine clinical expertise, education, mentorship, and service to make a meaningful impact in the nursing community.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Marilyn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the diverse experiences I have gained throughout my nursing career, particularly in emergency room and med-surg settings, which have provided me with a strong clinical foundation. Working at a crisis center during a transition in my career also broadened my perspective. My sister has been an important mentor and influence, and I now enjoy mentoring others in my community, including helping nursing students prepare for the NCLEX exam.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering nursing is to be yourself and not be afraid to ask questions. I want them to know that they do not have to feel nervous or intimidated because I am here to support them, share my experience, and serve as a resource. I believe in creating an open, supportive environment where we can talk honestly and learn from one another.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are compassion, service, family, and supporting others. I see helping people as my calling, which is reflected in my work creating study materials through Robinson Learning Company. Family is equally important to me, from caring for my 79-year-old mother to supporting my son as he studies software engineering and game design. I chose to pause my own master’s degree so I could be there for him, reflecting my commitment to putting family first when they need me.
