About Marilynn
Marilynn Chavez serves as a Legal Advocate at Family Rescue in Chicago, Illinois. In this role for the past seven and a half months, she assists survivors of domestic violence by helping with orders of protection, preparing clients for court, and providing referrals for legal aid, housing, counseling, and other services. She has a total of one year and seven months of experience in the domestic violence field, having previously worked as a bilingual research and information advocate at Metropolitan Family Services. Chavez studied psychology and criminology in college and is an aspiring lawyer planning to attend law school. She is a 40-hour domestic violence trained professional with ICDBP approval and holds an Adult Mental Health First Aid Certification through the National Council for Wellbeing. Her work focuses on supporting underrepresented communities, including those from Hispanic backgrounds and the LGBTQ community, through crisis intervention and client-centered support at nonprofit agencies. Chavez participates in the Endeavor Health program, the Domestic Violence Walk, and resource fairs, and she received a One Year Service Award from Metropolitan Family Services.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Always lead with compassion and empathy. Focus on your own mental health to avoid burnout because this role is very rewarding but can take a toll if you do not take care of yourself.
