About Marisa
Marisa Noe serves as a professor of Italian and Spanish language. She teaches both subjects at the high school level and Italian at the Berkeley Conservatory of Music, where her instruction includes helping students perform opera in Italian, drawing from her upbringing in Verona, Italy. Noe previously worked as a medical interpreter in Boston area hospitals before transitioning to teaching. She earned a doctorate in modern languages, including Italian and Spanish, from Middlebury College in Vermont, along with earlier degrees focused on theology and ancient languages such as Greek, Latin, Aramaic, and Hebrew. She is currently pursuing a second PhD in theology at the University of Italian Switzerland. Noe attributes her success to extensive study, patience in learning, dedication to her role as a mother, and strong faith, which she maintains through close ties to her church and community. She values time spent with family alongside continuous personal development and learning. Noe advises young women entering her field not to give up on their pursuits and notes that motherhood contributes to becoming a more well-rounded woman.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I have studied a lot and spent hours and hours studying. I have the patience to sit down and study for hours and read and get informed. I dedicated myself to being a mother and to study a lot. Faith is very important in my life and I've always been very close to my church and community.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't give up if you want to pursue something. Don't let motherhood or things like that stop you because that only helps to become a better, more well-rounded woman.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Time is precious. To be able to spend time with family but at the same time develop myself and always be learning something new. I cannot stop learning. Faith is very important.
