About Marisol
Marisol Maloney is the founder of Secret Squirrel Consulting, a boutique career coaching and resume-writing business she launched after seeing firsthand how difficult the military-to-civilian transition can be for veterans. After retiring from the Navy and working as a recruiter in defense contracting, she realized many highly qualified service members were being overlooked because their resumes did not clearly translate their military experience into civilian language. What began as helping fellow veterans for free quickly grew into a business focused on resume writing, LinkedIn optimization, interview preparation, salary negotiation, and transition coaching for veterans, military spouses, federal employees, and civilians.
A 20-year Navy veteran, Marisol built a unique career that included emergency nursing, intelligence work, executive communications, and recruiting. She served as a Nurse Corps officer before transitioning into the intelligence community, where she earned top-secret clearance and worked in national security roles. She also served as a speechwriter for a four-star admiral, a role that sharpened her ability to translate highly technical and classified information into language that others could understand. Today, she describes herself as a “vetterpreter” because she speaks both the military and civilian worlds fluently and helps clients bridge the gap between them.
Through Secret Squirrel Consulting, Marisol is passionate about helping people overcome imposter syndrome, recognize their value, and confidently market themselves to employers. She specializes in working with top-secret and secret-cleared professionals, teaching them how to explain their experience without compromising operational security. Whether she is rewriting resumes, coaching clients through interviews, or sharing free advice online, Marisol is driven by a deep commitment to helping veterans succeed after service and ensuring they feel supported during one of the biggest transitions of their lives.

Ten minutes with Marisol
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to self-determination, grit, and a commitment to continuous learning.
I didn't come from privilege or a well-defined roadmap. Getting to where I am today required persistence, resilience, and a willingness to keep moving forward when things didn't go as planned. My upbringing and military service played a significant role in shaping who I am and taught me the value of hard work, adaptability, and perseverance.
People often see the end result but not the challenges, setbacks, and sacrifices it took to get there. It truly was determination and grit that helped me navigate career transitions, overcome obstacles, and eventually build my business from the ground up.
I also attribute my success to curiosity and resourcefulness. I've never been afraid to ask questions, seek out mentors, or learn from people who have accomplished what I'm trying to achieve. I continue to invest in my professional development through courses, conferences, networking, and lifelong learning because I believe growth doesn't stop once you've achieved a goal.
Ultimately, success isn't a destination, it's a continuous process of learning, adapting, and showing up even when the path forward isn't always clear.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Ironically, some of the most valuable lessons I've learned came from receiving bad career advice.
Throughout my career, I've had well-intentioned people tell me what I couldn't do or why a particular goal wasn't realistic. In many cases, the advice came from people who had never accomplished what I was trying to achieve themselves.
What I learned is that it's important to listen to feedback, but also to consider the source. I seek advice from people who have successfully navigated the path I'm pursuing and can provide informed guidance based on firsthand experience.
The best career advice I follow today is simple: don't let someone else's limitations define your potential. Be willing to chart your own course, do the work, and stay focused on your goals, even when others don't see the vision.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Do your research, find your "why," and don't be afraid to niche down.
Take the time to understand the industry you're entering, the skills that are in demand, and the career paths available to you. Be intentional about your goals rather than simply following what everyone else is doing.
Know why you're pursuing a particular career. When challenges arise—and they will—having a clear sense of purpose can help you stay focused and make decisions that align with your long-term goals.
Finally, don't feel pressured to be everything to everyone. Developing expertise in a specific area can help you stand out, build credibility, and create opportunities that may not be available to generalists. The more clearly you can communicate your value, the easier it becomes for others to recognize it as well.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI presents both a challenge and an opportunity. While AI can help job seekers get started, it often produces generic resumes and LinkedIn profiles that fail to stand out.
The opportunity lies in teaching people how to use AI strategically while still creating authentic, targeted career documents.
Within the Top Secret cleared community, another challenge is the misconception that a security clearance alone guarantees job opportunities. In reality, employers are looking for a combination of clearance, skills, certifications, education, and relevant experience.
Helping cleared candidates understand how to position themselves competitively is one of the biggest opportunities in my field.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are integrity, service, accountability, continuous learning, and helping others succeed while also empowering them.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is helping people, especially transitioning military, recognize their strengths, translate their experiences into civilian language, and gain the confidence to pursue opportunities they may not have thought were possible.
I strive to be someone people can trust, depend on, and turn to for honest guidance.
