Her Story

About Marissa

Marissa Bell is an e-commerce and digital product professional based in San Ramon, California. She began her career in quality assurance, collaborating closely with customer feedback teams, and transitioned into digital media before pursuing e-commerce full-time starting with her first official role in 2013. Over the subsequent 13 years, she has built expertise in analyzing customer feedback and digital paid media metrics to implement site changes that drive revenue, support brand initiatives, and foster innovation. Bell earned her MBA in finance and marketing while working full-time, first at a CPG brand during her undergraduate studies and then at a digital advertising agency during graduate school, allowing her to apply academic learning directly to professional projects. In her role, she meets regularly with cross-functional partners in brand marketing and education, conducts site audits to ensure compliance and system performance, collaborates with operations teams, and explores new initiatives to streamline processes and enhance customer experiences. She prioritizes integrity by ensuring authentic recommendations and relationships, maintaining honesty about knowledge gaps, and committing to lifelong learning through updated certifications such as GA4 analytics and SEO/AEO. Bell values staying curious, learning from cross-functional teams to anticipate needs, and leaving every interaction or project better than she found it.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was to work at smaller companies early on to learn a lot by working directly with CEOs and directors. This helps understand how different departments function, especially in digital product or e-commerce, making you more influential as you grow. Stay curious, learn from cross-functional teams to foresee needs and remove obstacles for them.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

For young women entering the field, focus on integrity and curiosity. Have honest conversations with yourself about gaps in understanding, then learn passionately to become a knowledgeable cross-functional partner. This builds trust and respect from peers and leadership, enabling effective leadership and career growth.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges and opportunities is exploring AI tools and platforms sensibly to make real impact, enhance brand presence, and help customers get needed items for happiness and repeat business. Leverage AI while continuously learning new modalities and approaches to stay ahead without relying solely on automations.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is most important, meaning recommendations, value brought, and relationships are authentic and align with values. The desire to be helpful and useful, leaving every scenario better than when joined. Speak up when unaware of something rather than winging it, be honest, an open communicator who listens and learns from others including direct reports, and respect 'no' answers while understanding why to align future recommendations.
