Marissa R. Gillis is a Research Analyst at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she works within the Office of Corporate Relations to connect industry partners with MIT's world-renowned research community. Through the Industrial Liaison Program, she identifies emerging technologies, analyzes industry challenges, and facilitates strategic collaborations between academic experts and organizations seeking innovative solutions. Her work spans a broad range of disciplines, including artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, nuclear energy, and materials circularity, helping bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world business applications.
Prior to joining MIT, Marissa built a diverse professional background in public relations, marketing analytics, and business intelligence. Her experience includes roles in government affairs, data analytics, and strategic communications, equipping her with a multidisciplinary perspective on business innovation and organizational growth. Committed to lifelong learning, she has completed advanced professional education through MIT Sloan School of Management in AI Essentials and earned a Certification in Crisis Management and Business Resiliency. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to self-confidence, a quality that was instilled in me from an early age by my family. My parents always reminded me that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to, and that belief became deeply rooted in how I approach challenges. Rather than questioning whether something is possible, I focus on working hard, continuing to learn, and finding a way to achieve my goals.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women to remember that they are just as capable and qualified as anyone else in the room. It's important not to let self-doubt or overthinking undermine your confidence. Take a moment to center yourself, trust your abilities, and recognize that you have earned your place. Believe in your potential and never underestimate what you can accomplish.
