Her Story

About marissa

Marissa Valentin serves as Creative Director in the art industry from her base in Newport News, Virginia. She has spent the past three years building a business around sip and paint instruction and event coordination after transitioning from a coffee shop role where she first organized events. Marissa creates experiences that foster self-expression and safe spaces for participants to be authentic, drawing on her lifelong passion for art that began in childhood classes and continued through informal training in techniques such as stained glass and wood burning. She attributes her progress to courage in pushing through doubts and consistently showing up, and she advises young women entering the field to start immediately, communicate their needs clearly, and allow themselves room for growth that is not always linear.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with marissa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say just maybe courage. Courage to be yourself, to consistently at least try. Having to push through those doubts and insecurities, and still showing up, even when I feel like I'm not at my best.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You just have to start. Speak up and communicate your wants and needs. Embody being that boss now by making decisions that align with that vision. Give yourself space to mess up because healing and growth are not linear. Be present where you are today and maintain faith even when progress feels slow.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Resources like getting easels affordably is challenging and grows over time. Motivating people who get frustrated and want to give up during classes, learning to keep energy high and guide them through the process.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Self-expression and self-love. Honoring ourselves so we can be authentic. Creating safe spaces for people to express themselves honestly, even the uncomfortable parts, whether through art, fashion, or just being present.
