Her Story

About Marjorie

I have been in my current industry for only 18 months after working at the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority as Senior Business Development Analyst. In that role I empowered executive leadership with data analytics and process improvements, led cross-functional changes, and designed reporting systems for risks and operational gaps.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Marjorie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my drive. I am always learning and hungry to learn more because the more I learn the more I can contribute to the success of my team and the agency I work for. My personal drive is to do better and make things better for everyone around me.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received is that operational excellence is not achieved through one-time initiatives but through continuous improvement, and that progress is more important than perfection. Also, successful transformation requires equal attention to people, processes, and performance.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep driving forward and be that squeaky wheel. It is tough being a woman in leadership roles especially when most are male and they tend to dismiss your input, but speak up and make sure your voice is heard. Also ensure that everyone's voice on the team is important.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Opportunities include continuous improvement, focusing on operational challenges, ensuring communication, transparency, prioritization, and employee engagement to build high-performing teams. Challenges include improving consistency across teams, obtaining buy-in for changes, and building systems for solutions while managing cultural changes.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important values to me are integrity and accountability. I hold myself accountable with the highest integrity so my team follows suit. Integrity means always doing the right thing even if no one's watching, and accountability is a personal choice.
