Her Story

About Marjorie

Marjorie Thulin is a therapist and owner of a private practice in Naperville, Illinois, where she works with children, adolescents, families, and provides marriage counseling. She earned her bachelor's degree from Loyola University Chicago in December 2008, her master's in social work from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and recently completed her PhD in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. Thulin worked as a school social worker for nearly 10 years until 2021 and began her private practice part-time in 2018 before launching it fully in December 2025. She also completed a LEAD fellowship program at the University of Minnesota from 2023 to 2024. A bilingual and bicultural professional who migrated from Honduras, Thulin is a longtime member of the Illinois Association of School Social Workers, where she served as a conference assistant in 2019 and 2020. She attributes her success to the tenacity and advocacy modeled by her mother and to her strong spiritual foundation in Christianity, which emphasizes ongoing learning and connection with God.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Marjorie

01What do you attribute your success to?

My mom has been an incredible role model, teaching me tenacity and advocacy despite structural barriers as an immigrant. She also raised me with a strong spiritual foundation in Christianity, emphasizing ongoing learning, prayer, and connection with God. These have been key to my success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be patient because the journey to growing professionally is not easy. You may need to take jobs not directly connected to your field to learn something valuable. Life is a marathon, and if you keep the same tenacity, you will get there.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Policy changes impacting children, adolescents, and immigrant families create high stress. School personnel face empathy fatigue and burnout due to community needs and insufficient resources.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Tenacity is key, as I've faced many rejections. Being organized with time, engaging in self-care through family, spiritual connection, and maintaining a sense of belonging with family support.
