Marleah Dean Kruzel

Marleah Dean Kruzel, PhD (she/her) is an accomplished TEDx speaker, researcher, and Associate Professor of Health Communication at the University of South Florida. Her work centers on improving communication between patients, clinicians, and academic communities to enhance health outcomes and ensure research insights are accessible and actionable. As a member of both the Moffitt Cancer Center's Health Outcomes & Behavior Program and the Tampa General Cancer Institute, Dr. Kruzel’s research is rooted in real-world impact, especially for those navigating complex health decisions.
A recognized expert in the experiences of previvors—individuals with inherited gene mutations who have not yet developed cancer—Dr. Kruzel brings personal insight to her work as a BRCA2-positive previvor herself. She is deeply engaged in public education and advocacy, having contributed to the CDC’s “Bring Your Brave” campaign and served as a social media ambassador for the National Society of Genetic Counselors. Through her research, teaching, and outreach, she continues to champion patient empowerment, informed decision-making, and compassionate communication in healthcare. What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the field is the slow translation of cancer research discoveries into clinical practice, highlighting the urgent need for more accessible and understandable research communication for both patients and the public.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Work-life balance, especially as a professor and parent, along with a passion for travel and the outdoors, are core values that help sustain both personal fulfillment and professional impact.
