Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I would say it's really just being honest, being reliable, and learning how to have patience. A lot of people don't have patience. Everybody I talk to, most people out here say they cannot do my job, and I said, I know you can't. You gotta have a special heart, and you gotta have patience. A lot of patience. I also believe in having a strong support system and team. I have a couple colleagues who have tried to do things individually, and they have failed. And then they're looking at me, and they're like, dang, you still doing it. I'm like, yes, but I'm not doing it by myself. It's my secretary, it's the other clinicians, it's my partners, it's my family, so I have a team.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I ever received was from one of my mentors, and I still laugh about it to this day, and I still do it. Whenever there is a training opportunity that is free, that you can get CE, take your butt to them. I still do that to this day. I used to laugh when she said that, because I would always be like, oh, you gotta pay for this and do that, and she's like, no. If you ever see a training that is free, take your butt to it, and get your CEU that you need, and get the, you know, add to your report.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say collectively, surround yourself with positive people who have the same mindset and goal as yourself. That, to me, is the only way you can be successful. You can't go into business with everybody, so you gotta have like-minded people who have the same focus and goal as yourself. You also gotta be able to trust your gut. A lot of people don't have patience, because starting a business, you gotta learn the foundation, you gotta learn the ins and the outs, most definitely the laws and the expectations to establishing and running a business, along with having support.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think the challenges facing entering into this field, you gotta be able to trust your gut. A lot of people don't have patience, because starting a business, you gotta learn the foundation, you gotta learn the ins and the outs, most definitely the laws and the expectations to establishing and running a business, along with having support. And I think the downfall is a lot of people want to do it, but you hear a lot of people close up because they don't have a team. Collectively, they don't know how to support. I talk to a lot of women all the time, and they're like, well, you know, how do you make it do what it do? And I said, because collectively, I have a team. Even though, yes, my name stands out on a lot of things, but collectively, it's not just me. It's my secretary, it's the other clinicians, it's my partners, it's my family. That's the biggest downfall when you don't have a team. I have a couple colleagues who have tried to do things individually, and they have failed.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The simplest thing I can say, what I value the most, is my family. I mean, I don't think I would be where I am if I didn't have their support. My mother has been supportive, I would say, throughout my entire life, and my daughter is the same thing, so I would say family. That's my key. Anything that I do, any decisions I make, any move that I make, is my family. I have one child, I raised my stepchildren, there's 5 of them, but I only have one. I don't try to make decisions without looking at the pros and the cons, assets versus liabilities. Is it gonna add to me, or is it gonna be a liability? I don't make that without considering everybody, what the outcome is, any financial decisions, any business decisions.
