Her Story

About Marsha

I'm a registered nurse by profession and have been a nurse for well over 30 years. I was a cardiology nurse, working in a specific area within cardiology where I had a lot of lifestyle conversations, educating people on their medicines, different devices, and different studies. I worked hand-in-hand with the physician, went to all of the procedures, scheduled all of his procedures, and went to the vast majority of them. I got to see patients through the continuum - before they had the procedure, during the procedure, after the procedure, and then in the clinic. It was a really nice way to watch a patient journey. The doctor would go in and do his work, but he could be intimidating because he's super smart and talks fast. So afterwards, he'd leave the room and patients would ask me, 'What did he say? What's gonna happen? I don't understand?' I would help them feel a lot more comfortable about what they were going to go through, and they were very grateful for the time that I would take with them. As a coach for the past 8 years, I feel it's important for people's stories to be heard and for people's voices to be heard. That's what I do through my coaching - help amplify women's voices. Coaching and nursing for me go hand in hand. I was always educating my patients about their lifestyle improvements, especially in my area of specialty, and I just felt like although that was impactful, I felt a calling to lean more into helping women amplify their voice, know that their voice matters, and giving them the power to be able to do so.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've read and I've learned that success always leaves clues. I think that if you are reflective in your life and you kind of look back, you can see what are the things that have led you on this journey to where you are right now. There's probably a series of events that have occurred that led a person to be where they are. I think that if you pay attention to what the clues are and you kind of double down in knowing - there's certain things now when I look back on my life, I'm like, oh, that's why I did that. That's why this opportunity came. That's why I spoke to this person. That's why this person influenced my life. On reflection, I can see how that has guided me here. So I think to really be aware of the successful moments that you've had in your life, even though they're not necessarily related to what you're doing right now. Paying attention to that, I think that allows you to pivot, because it kind of reassures that you're on the right path.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think, you know, as an entrepreneur, because I am partially an entrepreneur as well, you have to have stick-to-itiveness. So, despite the ups, the downs, the slow season, I think you have to stay true to yourself and to your message and be consistent. I think that's one of the things that people give up, is the consistency, and although it sounds easy, it's actually hard to stay consistent. People will be consistent for, you know, a month or two. You gotta stay in it for the long game, and just know what your message is, and stick to it no matter what, if that's truly what you believe in.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think that people don't recognize the value that coaches really bring. They're a little hesitant because, I mean, a lot of that is fear-based. Until they start to engage in the conversations that I have with them, they're not really sure. I think there's a lot of people out there that might say they're coaches, and how do you really get a person to have a transformational experience? I've been taught how to do that, and I see my clients afterwards out in the world doing their thing, and I know that I have had a small impact because they come back and tell me. So, I find that it's just the value that people don't really recognize at the beginning. That's probably the biggest challenge.
