Marsha Vance
I started with search and rescue 12 years ago and have been doing it ever since. I volunteer with Apache County Search and Rescue, Greenlee County Search and Rescue, and the Police Department. I keep up on all the classes and attend the state search and coordinator conference every two years, which is a four-day training. I'm my own boss now, and my website is launching in two weeks. I teach classes for free because I want people to be aware when they're traveling and to be prepared. I always have a medical kit in my backseat that weighs about 50 pounds, and I'm the type of person who will stop at an accident and render first aid until first responders show up. I do all the vitals, talk to them, and make sure they're okay, then I write down everything I can on heartbeat, eyes, if they're dilated, injuries, and give my notes to the first responders when they arrive. We do mock searches with about 20 of us, including people that walk, ATVs, horses, and dogs, and we invite other counties to come and join us. I've done two recoveries, which is never fun, and it's hard when you find a body that's been decomposed. I have a journal that I write in to process how these experiences affect me, because I know that was somebody's loved one. My personal favorite saying is leave footprints of kindness wherever you go, because we need more kindness in this world.

What do you attribute your success to?
I always believe in helping other people, no matter what backgrounds they're from. I think everybody deserves a second chance and a show of kindness. That goes a long way, and it's not about the rewards or the thanks, but it's about me showing other people that we can do this. Just be kind. I want people to go out when they're traveling prepared, because you know the quote, it'll never happen to me, but it does. My thing is showing you how to be prepared, what you should have in your car when you travel at all times. I'm the type of person that if I see somebody in need or in help, I'll do everything I can to get them what they need or help them in any way I can. And it's just how I was taught. You know, be kind, because kindness goes a long way.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Never give up. Keep going through for training. If there's any classes that you can take to hone your skills, do it, take those classes, because it sharpens your mind, it sharpens your skills. Just go out and explore, you know, and mentor the young girls, because they're the future. And just mentor anybody that's out on the road, you know, what you should have in your car when you travel, because it could be a lifesaver.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think there's always an opportunity for growth and for helping other people. Like I said, I teach these classes for free because I want people to be aware when you're traveling and to be aware of your surroundings, traffic, weather conditions. That all plays an effect. We've done two recoveries, which is never fun, and trying to tell their loved one I'm sorry he didn't make it or they didn't make it, it's hard. And it kind of makes you reflect, you know, what was this person like, and why did this happen. It's hard when you find a body that's been decomposed. It plays with your emotions and your mind a little bit, and I have a journal that I write in. I write about how did this affect me, why did it affect me, how did it affect me this way, because I know that that was somebody's loved one.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family comes first. I have an extended family. I'm about a four and a half hour drive from Phoenix, so my family is all down in Phoenix, and I've got a brother in Florida. But family comes first. I'm an outdoor person, I love being outdoors, I love wildlife photography. My personal favorite saying is leave footprints of kindness wherever you go, because we need more kindness in this world.
