Her Story

About Martha

I have been in real estate for 20 years, starting in 2006. Throughout my career, I've worked with just three companies - Century 21, then Metro Brokers, and now I've been with Maximo One for over 12 years as an associate broker. My main focus is helping first-time homebuyers, working with relocation clients, and assisting people who are downsizing, especially seniors who have been in their homes for so long and are ready to transition to 55+ communities. Originally from Colombia, South America, I came to this country with two degrees - industrial engineer and technology engineer - and I always focused on careers where helping others was the most important part. Even with those degrees that could have taken me into finance or corporations, I always focused on working with people. When I came here, I started in real estate and earned different certifications for representing buyers and sellers and doing price analysis. My responsibility is helping people make decisions about their homes, whether selling or buying, and basically advising them if it's the right decision for them or not. I am their advisor. This profession has so many rewards - when I see seniors who couldn't even go upstairs because they had so many steps in their house, and then I help them get something easier for them, and they tell me 'Martha, it's amazing where we live now, thank you,' that's what drives me. It's not just selling a house for me, it's advising them and helping them make sure they understand what they are doing.

Ten minutes with Martha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to dedication and passion for helping people. I am very dedicated and passionate about helping them, and people know that every time they call me with questions, I am there. I like to teach people the steps and make sure that they understand what they are doing. This is not just selling a house for me - it's not just selling the house, it's advising them and helping them. I really say that with my heart. My best compliment is when people say, 'We are looking for you, and I came back to you because I know how you deal with my brother, and we just can close our eyes, and we know that you're going to look the best for us.' That's my best compliment that I have received.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be yourself. That's the most important. Listen to your heart and do your work. Don't be scared - don't worry that you're not going to be able to do this or that somebody else looks like they have so many years and works in different ways. Just be yourself, make sure that you are loving what you do, and you feel what you're doing and be honest. Don't try to be like somebody else, because now with social media, we see people and say, 'Oh, that's great how they do,' but it's not you, don't worry. It's not you. You are going to be you, and it's going to be great.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I don't know if we have challenges, but realtors, we have challenges every day, because this industry changes so much every day. You have to stay updated with everything - with the changes, the laws, and how to represent correctly to the people. But it's not a challenge, it's just to be informed all the time.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, authenticity, and simplicity are most important to me. I think that being simple and down to earth is important for me. And of course, those values go with family too.
