Her Story

About Martha

Martha Swift serves as Manager on the Social Excellence Team at Digitas Health, a Publicis Group company with offices in New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Based in the Financial District of New York City, she specializes in social media for pharmaceutical marketing. Her responsibilities include social listening through manual scrapes and tools to monitor discussions about client drugs and competitors, staying current on platform updates, and identifying trending opportunities for content. Swift joined the field after earning her communication degree from Fairfield University in May 2023. She attributes her success to her mother's example of hard work and passion in digital media. Swift volunteers with Fill a Heart for Kids, an organization providing essentials to children in foster care, a commitment she has maintained since high school. She advises young women entering the industry to believe in themselves and avoid self-doubt, while emphasizing the importance of work-life balance and honesty in both professional and personal spheres.

Ten minutes with Martha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say my mom, like, 100%. She is probably the most hardworking person I know. And she is in a position where she doesn't really have to work, but because Alzheimer's runs on her side of her family, she wants to keep her brain as strong as she can as long as possible, and she absolutely loves what she does, which is also digital media. Seeing my mom's drive and the passion she has for what she does has definitely been my biggest inspiration since entering the workforce.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Probably it's so basic, but just like keep at it. My mom told me that probably weekly when I first started my job. Just give yourself time and keep at it. I had a manager who understood that I was coming straight out of college, this was my first job, and he was willing to take that time and really teach me the things that I need to be successful in this career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't doubt yourself. Just believe in yourself and what you're capable of. And just don't let that self-doubt kind of creep in and diminish your true potential. Because if you let that self-doubt take over, you're never gonna get anywhere.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges is with the current administration, there have been a lot of crackdowns on pharma marketing content, whether it's TV or social media. We've had to be extra careful about what we're saying in our ads. One of the biggest opportunities is that pharma doesn't slow down, so even with the new regulations we're facing, we're still doing pitches weekly. There's still a lot of new business opportunities coming in, which is really exciting.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Make sure to balance your work and your personal life so you're not just feeling like all you do is work. Also just be honest with yourself. If you're not loving where you're at in your career, then just be honest with yourself, accept that, and maybe look for another path. Same with your personal life, just staying true to yourself and being honest about what's happening in your life.
