Her Story
About Martie
I'm a construction manager at LytFiber, where I run projects for serving areas across East Texas. My role involves managing contractors - I get the projects and the maps, and once the contractor's already signed to it, it comes to me. I tell the contractors when we're going to start, and I run the whole project from there. I've been in the business for over 25 years, and I've been in the field for 5 of those years. Sometimes you have to work from the ground up, and that's okay, because then you know more than the people out in the field. I walk into the room with confidence, and I tell people that I tell men what to do all day. I'm tenacious - if I want something, I go after it. I get things done. My friends will tell you that I get shit done. That's my mantra.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Martie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I'm tenacious. I was interviewing for a position at Comcast with this gentleman named David Brown - I didn't get the job, but he told me, 'you're tenacious, and I like that about you.' If I want something, I go after it. I get things done. My friends will tell you that I get things done. I get shit done. That's my mantra. I walk into the room with confidence, and I think that makes all the difference in this field.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't give up. I'm in my 50s, and I've been in the business for over 25 years, and I've been in the field for 5 of those years. Sometimes you have to work from the ground up, and that's okay, because then you know more than the people out in the field. When you work your way up from the ground, you gain knowledge that the people in the male-prevalent field don't always have. So don't give up - it's worth it.
