Her Story

About Mary

Mary Cairns began her career as an interior decorator, launching her own business in 1995 and operating it for 25 years. In 2009, she transitioned to philanthropy work in rural India at a school for girls, where she developed a comprehensive health and hygiene program that evolved from basic hygiene education to include a full medical clinic staffed by a nurse for 13 years, immunization programs, HPV vaccines, and a menstrual health program providing free sanitary pads, menstrual cups, and washable panties. Her efforts have supported the school's growth to 4,000 girls, with 97 percent advancing to higher education, and she has also contributed to community programs such as self-help groups for 15,000 women. Cairns is a member of AAUW and recently published her book, Where the Girls Bloom, which shares her story alongside those of the girls at the school. She attributes her success to a lifelong drive and adventurous spirit that began in childhood, along with a willingness to seize opportunities and pursue passions, and she advises young women entering business that they can achieve anything they set their minds and hearts to.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mary

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've always had drive since I was a kid. I'm adventurous and grab onto almost any opportunity presented to me. I'm not afraid to go in and conquer what can be seemingly difficult or impossible opportunities. I believe it's important to have passion and discover what your passion is.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I've always enjoyed working with young women who are considering going into business and just telling them that they can do it. It is possible, that they can do it. I think supporting and encouraging women is really, really important. The most important thing is that you can do it. I believe that we can do anything that our minds and our hearts are set to.
