Ten minutes with Mary
01What do you attribute your success to?
I got my start back in my younger years in my 20s. I come from a Hispanic teaching there America Caucasian area... married Caucasian... a friend of mine was looking for a person that was bilingual... they hired me... I did public speaking. I ran for city council... Vice President of SARE Jobs for Progress... president for number 2 Sarah's Job for Progress... GI forum. I had a lot of politics behind me... I actually worked a lot with the public... because I was bilingual.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
It was a doctor... And he told me when I'm balancing, it's not balanced unless it's at zero... to work 15 minutes before. If you're there right in the dot, you're late... Report to work. If you have a headache, take a pill... I hear you have a cold, take some medicine, report to work unless you're dead.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
They must love the career... you're going to deal with a lot of different personalities... you must always be at a point where you agree or disagree, but you're going to be kind and loving, and you need to love the product... I ran apartments... If you're in a position where you don't love the product, move, move, because you're not going to sell it.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
My biggest challenge is I am going to be [AGE], okay? And so, learning the new technology... always changing, and so for me, at my age, people get stuck... I have to keep an open mind and say, I'm going to learn this. So, not getting stuck in, in the past.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty... You're being upfront, not lying... honest really important to me.
