Her Story

About Mary

Mary Dougherty is a Real Estate Salesperson with Nelson Realtors, bringing more than three decades of experience in the real estate industry. She entered the field in 1991 after being downsized from a communications company and initially joined a real estate firm as a receptionist through a friend’s referral. Recognizing her potential, the firm’s owner encouraged her to obtain her real estate salesperson license and later her broker’s license, ultimately giving her the opportunity to open a second office. This early experience established a strong foundation for her career and taught her the importance of adaptability, initiative, and building meaningful professional relationships.

After getting married, Mary transitioned into relocation services after being recruited by a global relocation company. Over approximately 15 years, she traveled internationally to assist expatriates relocating between countries on behalf of manufacturing and pharmaceutical companies. Her extensive relocation experience broadened her understanding of international markets and diverse client needs while strengthening her ability to manage complex transitions. Following the 2008 real estate market crash and the decline in expatriate relocation packages by 2011, Mary returned to traditional real estate and established her own real estate team.

Today, Mary continues her work as a Real Estate Salesperson at Nelson Realtors, providing buyers and sellers with responsive, knowledgeable, and client-focused guidance. Her approach is centered on understanding each client’s individual needs, maintaining consistent professional routines, developing effective market strategies, and remaining accessible throughout the real estate process. With experience spanning residential real estate, brokerage, global relocation, and team leadership, Mary has built a career defined by resilience, adaptability, relationship-building, and a genuine commitment to helping clients achieve their real estate goals.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mary

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to embracing the unexpected and remaining open to the opportunities that have come my way. Throughout my professional journey, I have learned to adapt, take calculated risks, and recognize that some of the most meaningful opportunities can arise from circumstances I never planned for. Staying curious, resilient, and willing to step outside my comfort zone has allowed me to grow personally and professionally while building a career that is both rewarding and purposeful.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to recognize the value of relationships and the impact they can have on both personal and professional growth. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to learn from mentors, colleagues, and others who have encouraged me, challenged my thinking, and opened doors to new opportunities. Those relationships have taught me the importance of building genuine connections, supporting others, and remaining open to learning. I believe that success is not achieved alone, and that the relationships we cultivate can shape our careers in meaningful and lasting ways.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise young women entering the real estate industry to take the time to truly understand the business before committing to it. Real estate can be rewarding, but it requires dedication, resilience, and a clear understanding of the responsibilities and demands involved. I encourage women to educate themselves, seek guidance from experienced professionals, build strong relationships, and make informed decisions about the direction they want their careers to take.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I have learned throughout my career that some of life’s greatest opportunities can emerge from unexpected setbacks. Rather than allowing challenges to define my path, I have chosen to view them as opportunities to learn, adapt, and grow. In real estate, change and uncertainty can present challenges, but they can also create new possibilities for innovation, professional growth, and meaningful connections. Staying resilient, remaining open to new opportunities, and trusting the lessons gained from difficult experiences have been essential to my continued success.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Authenticity is one of the principles that guides me both personally and professionally. I believe in being genuine, honest, and true to my values in every interaction, while treating others with respect and integrity. I also value strong relationships, trust, compassion, and a willingness to remain open to learning and growth. Staying authentic allows me to build meaningful connections, make decisions I can stand behind, and approach both my work and personal life with purpose.
