Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mary

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to having determination, integrity and kindness. I try to make people feel comfortable during an interview because it helps them open up and share their story, especially when it's a difficult topic.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to verify, verify, verify.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's important to have mentors. I learned the most from other experienced journalists. Don't be afraid to ask the hard questions. You want your stories to contain the most updated, accurate information. Readers will then start looking forward to your stories to keep them informed.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

To go from being a newspaper journalist back to creating a newsletter was a little challenging. I had to take in consideration who my audience is and what interests them. I've gone from reporting hard news crime stories to writing uplifting short stories and briefs. At this point in my life, I love it!

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Truth and integrity. You're only as good as your name. Be fair, and be kind - especially when your stories and people are challenging.
