Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mary

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success early on in my career came from a great support system at our firm in Chicago and still in Atlanta. I needed individuals that would support my career with training, growth and development. Mentoring from senior advisors who were females in the office was tremendous, as was learning from the senior leadership team about success, execution, and processes.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Clients always come first because it's about them and the human lives we impact, not the money. You need tremendous support and good processes to make your practice sustainable. Your reputation is all you have in this industry, and once you mess that up you're done. Always do the right thing when nobody's looking.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It is one of the most rewarding careers with great work-life balance and flexibility, especially if starting a family. It's entrepreneurial and allows control of your destiny with many paths like advising, compliance, or teaching. The first five years require hard work building from scratch, but it becomes very rewarding. I wish someone had introduced me to it sooner.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

There's more work than people available, especially with compliance, fraud documentation, and due diligence making paperwork cumbersome. Technology integration is limited due to rules, but it's all to keep customers safe. Despite that, it's a very rewarding industry.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is at the top of the list because clients must trust you. Honesty, valuing other people, being flexible, understanding other cultures, caring about fellow individuals, and making sure we're doing the right things when nobody is looking.
