Her Story
About Mary
Mary Longe is an author, artist, and founder of Art Legacy Compass, a business she has led for about 15 years. She authored the book Our Legacy Compass, which outlines a 9-step process for helping artists and collectors downsize studios and estates while carrying forward what matters. Mary founded and served as executive director of Plein Air Painters of Chicago for five years, building it into a nationally recognized organization with 165 members who paint outdoors on weekends. Prior to her work in the arts, she had a full career in healthcare management. Trained as a health educator, she worked for 10 years at the American Hospital Association, where she created roles in wellness and women's health. She then ran her own business for 17 years designing specialty libraries and consumer resource centers for hospitals and corporations such as Dow Chemical and Texas Instruments. After retiring, Mary pursued art, studying at Sotheby's Institute of Art in London, and attributes her success to curiosity and abundant energy.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Mary
01What do you attribute your success to?
Curiosity and having a lot of energy. I just want to know more and do more. I often think about having another 25 years ahead and not thinking differently at this age.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Continue to understand who you are and what you want. Be a business person but also have a creative side that allows you to grow and break through blocks. Thinking creatively helps even in linear business environments.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being healthy, valuing relationships and family, being part of something, curiosity and learning, and having fun. Knowing what matters and not doing things that feel like work.
