Her Story
About Mary
Mary Lowery works as a utilization management associate. Outside of her day job, she is a self-taught artist who began painting in her early twenties and resumed in her thirties after raising five children as a single mother. Her art focuses on women and the healing process, and she has taught classes to women and children, previously operating her own art center before closing it due to economic reasons and shifting to online instruction. She has spoken at schools about her work and recently held her first curated art show, which was successful. She placed sixth in the Johnny Depp Art Asylum contest and now serves as an ambassador for the organization. In addition to her visual art, Lowery is an upcoming author who has completed three books, two collections of poetry and one memoir of her relationships, titled It Only Rains Twice, which is copyrighted and awaiting publication. She describes herself as a God-inspired artist whose work often comes from visions, and she credits her mother, children, and life experiences for her success while using art as a form of healing.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Mary
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success comes from my mom, my children, life experiences, and being a single mom who raised five kids by myself. I use art as healing and am God-inspired, with visions guiding my work. Raising my kids alone through struggles and using art to overcome has been key.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't let life's circumstances stop you from doing what your heart desires. Whatever you're made to do, do it. The Lord will show you what you're supposed to do in life. You just gotta do it and not stop and stare at it. When you get my age or older, don't have shoulda woulda coulda.
