About Mary
Mary McKenzie is a healthcare executive and Chief Administrative Officer at UVA Physicians Group, bringing more than 20 years of professional experience spanning healthcare communications, administrative leadership, organizational transformation, and strategic operations. She began her career as a communications consultant, working with healthcare organizations and clients before joining UVA Physicians Group in 2016. Over the years, she advanced through roles including Senior Editor for Legal Affairs, Director of Communications, and Senior Director of Administrative Operations before becoming Chief Administrative Officer in 2023.
In her current role, Mary provides strategic leadership across enterprise shared services, internal and executive communications, IT operations, governance, and policies for the faculty practice plan. She is recognized for her expertise in change management, digital and organizational transformation, and communications strategy, with a leadership approach centered on collaboration, curiosity, empathy, and organizational alignment. Her professional growth from communications specialist to healthcare executive is further reflected in her achievement as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), earned in 2025.
Beyond her executive responsibilities, Mary is committed to professional development and community service. She is involved with organizations including the Medical Group Management Association and the American College of Healthcare Executives, and she serves as a board member of the Charlottesville Free Clinic and on the Development Committee of the Charlottesville Sexual Assault Resource Agency. She holds a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Washington and a master's degree in Teaching from the University of Virginia, combining strong communication expertise with advanced leadership and healthcare administration experience.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my 20-year career in healthcare communications, continuous professional growth, and the diverse experiences that have shaped my leadership. As Chief Administrative Officer for UVA Physicians Group, I oversee areas including communications, IT, and governance, while drawing on my education and experience at the University of Washington, Columbia University, and the University of Virginia. Becoming a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives has also been a meaningful milestone in my professional journey.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to seek strong mentors, build meaningful professional relationships, and stay actively involved in organizations that support growth and service. My mentor, Arturo Saavedra, played an important role in my career advancement and inspired me to remain engaged in professional and community organizations.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women to remember that they can start anywhere in their career journey. With hard work, dedication, and persistence, they can grow, succeed, and build a fulfilling career in any field they choose. I am passionate about my role today, and I believe that staying committed to your goals can open meaningful opportunities.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
After two decades in healthcare communications and administration, I see an exciting opportunity to use my experience in a new way. I am considering starting my own consulting practice in the future, where I can share my expertise, support organizations, and take on new professional challenges.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value hard work, continuous growth, and dedication in both my professional and personal life. I believe in challenging myself to grow throughout my career while maintaining a healthy balance outside of work. I enjoy traveling with my three children, especially exploring places like Peru, and I love spending time outdoors and connecting with nature.
