Her Story
About Mary
Mary Ann Row serves as a teacher in the kindergarten prep classroom at Bright Horizons, a role she has held since 2006 after relocating to Seattle. Her professional journey in education began in the late 1990s in Korea, where she taught English to Korean students and advanced to the position of academic supervisor, managing both Korean and Western teachers with a servant leadership approach. She is currently completing a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of Washington, which she started after overcoming challenges in obtaining her Korean university transcripts. Row specializes in STEM education, conducting science experiments and research to make learning fun and inspiring for children, and she regularly assists a special needs teacher friend with classroom setup each summer. She attributes her success to dedicating herself fully to her work while maintaining ethical standards, continuously researching new approaches in her free time, and prioritizing children's happiness during learning. Her advice to young women entering the field is to pursue dreams without giving up, work hard, and prove their capabilities.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Mary
01What do you attribute your success to?
I put my all into my work, staying ethical and always trying to learn and do research in my free time. My goal is to have the kids happy when they're learning, not stressed. I do a lot of research on approaches to make science fun because I'm really into STEM. I like to have fun with the kids and learn with them. Seeing their reactions during experiments is golden and very rewarding.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
If you have a dream, don't give up, just work for it. You gotta earn it, prove that you are capable. Show them that yes, work hard.
