About Mary
Mary Toomey serves as Lead Radiologic Technologist at Mainline Health, where she has worked for 36 years. With 43 years of experience in healthcare, she focuses on leadership and ensuring staff achieve strong work-life balance in a 24-7 environment. Toomey earned her Master's in Health Administration from the University of St. Francis, a bachelor's degree in biology from Widener University, and her radiologic technology certification from Bryn Mawr Hospital. She is an active member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. Outside of her professional role, Toomey supports causes including pediatric cancer initiatives, the ALS Foundation, dog rescues, and monthly donations to St. Jude's. She attributes her success to being a good listener, remaining adaptable, and maintaining honesty, passion, empathy, and loyalty in both her work and personal life. A cancer survivor of 20 years, Toomey returned to education after raising her children and advanced from staff technologist to director through dedication and mentorship emphasizing trust, authenticity, and transparency.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I think being a really good listener. Very adaptable to things. Serious when need to be, but also can have fun in the job and at life. I don't take anything too serious. After I had cancer 20 years ago, I learned how not to sweat the small stuff anymore. That was my drive to go back and get my degree once my kids were raised. I went up from staff technologist all the way up to director over years, using what I learned to build the person I was going to be.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Someone who mentored me to where I was told me to put trust in God and be me, be real, be transparent, and that's what I did.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Not everything's for everyone, but to try to give it your best, and if it's not a right match, don't stay in it. It's not worth not being happy. There's too many things out there. I enjoy coming to work every day.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges are the delay for patients to get timely reports and trying to help them navigate through that. Being heard by administration is always a hard thing. Opportunities are there's a lot of room for growth and development. It affords you to work different times and still raise kids in a 24-7 business.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, passion, empathy, and loyalty.
