Her Story
About Mary
I am an Assistant Professor Research working with Dr. Ramandeep Rattel in Women's Health, and I'm entering my seventh year in the hospital industry. I completed my PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology, where I researched how Western diet induces type 2 diabetes and discovered important genes that were induced during this process. Based on my academics and how dietary interventions played a key role in influencing type 2 diabetes, my current boss reached out and asked me to join her lab. Now we work on how diet influences cancer progression, especially ovarian cancer. My main area of expertise is preclinical research in ovarian cancer, where I do a lot of metabolomics and study metabolism. I work to identify novel therapeutics in preclinical studies and do translational studies on mice, combining them with present immunotherapy or chemotherapies. My greatest achievements so far include receiving a fellowship from the American Association of Immunologists in 2024 and being recognized as an Early Career Investigator by the American Association of Cancer Research, also in 2024.

Ten minutes with Mary
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to many people, right from my parents who believed in me, and my husband who supported me to do my PhD. I got married at a very early age, like during my bachelor's, and my husband supported me to finish my PhD. Later, even when I got this opportunity, he resigned his job and came as a support, and now we are leading a happy life. I also want to mention my mentors who have been instrumental in my journey.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think women these days should be more passionate about what they do, whether it's business or whatever job they choose. If they join or get into the field, they should be giving their 100%. I know it's very difficult to balance work and life, but women should be more independent so they can also lead a life later on.
