Her Story

About Maryam

I have an interdisciplinary background in chemical and electrical engineering, which gives me the opportunity to be a good problem solver and critical thinker. My work mostly involves advanced materials and functional materials for power sources. Because I have different backgrounds, I can look at problems and challenges from different views and consider different aspects of the problem. My curiosity and adventurous personality pushed me to learn more and involve different aspects of things to each other. I came to the U.S. in 2021 to start working in research as an engineer, and I've been in my field for roughly 10 to 12 years. Currently, I'm a senior engineer, and before this I was a research assistant at Sony. Prior to that, I was a teaching assistant at university and also worked as a research assistant in earlier roles.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

As a woman in engineering, and especially in the tech field, it's a little difficult to survive in this field. So I just want to say that we have to remain strong and have a voice in industry, so each of us can pave the way for the future for women and girls coming to this industry. I know it's a little difficult, especially for immigrant women. When you are coming here, you have to endure differences simultaneously, but I can say that we can survive, never give up, and the future will be better for us.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

One of the most important values that people give me feedback on is hardworking and being proactive. I try to learn more and more and get involved in different things, so I don't only do my job, I also help other people as a teammate. In summary, my collaboration and teamwork, my hardworking and proactive nature are what define my values.
