Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to unwavering resilience and a strong work ethic, which has allowed me to navigate the ever evolving art world for over three decades. My ability to communicate, adapt and persevere through challenges, and still maintain a clear vision for my galleries has been central to building a thriving business that represents over 150 internationally recognized artists.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

As a young gallery owner, I was once told by a very astute German Curator visiting me; after I had confided in her that I was concerned that my gallery didn't look as sophisticated as the previous gallery that rented my space, who went out of business! She laughed and said in a thick German accent, "be beautiful & die a beautiful death" and I realized at that moment to trust my own solid instincts and stand-up for the art that I truely believed in.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

When asked for advice, I encourage young women entering any creative career to be brave while pursuing their passions while being prepared for challenges that inherently ensue when building a resume that is outside societal norms. In the art world, I encourage young women to think outside the box, but do it in a balanced business-like way which emphasizes the importance of taking risks, developing resilience, and cultivating a deep understanding of both the creative and business sides of the art world. Perseverance and patience to build a strong and dedicated team of staff, advisors, artists and vendors are essential to achieving long-term success.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Running an art business has had its challenges, and I often compare it to navigating stormy seas. I’ve managed my gallery through several economic recessions, foreign & domestic wars, national strife, including 9/11 and the pandemic, and have learned that times of uncertainty usually lead to increased interest in art as people seek comfort and inspiration from artists. I recall having my gallery fully stocked just before the 2020 pandemic, which initially led to a quiet period before an unexpected surge in engagement that has continued through to today. Clients are no longer "waiting" and depriving themselves of owning exceptional art. They have learned how important it is in today's tumultuous times to have something inspiring, beautiful, challenging, mysterious, soulful, uplifting, introspective and important on their walls and in the spaces that live and work in. I also navigate the complexities of running a gallery, from managing relationships with artists to balancing the business side of operations. Supporting and understanding the needs of the artists I represent is a top priority, as their creative vision is at the heart of our gallery’s success.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Above all, I value the transformative power of art and its impact on people’s lives. I have witnessed how carefully curated works can inspire and uplift clients, especially during reflective and challanging times. Our gallery’s involvement with local charities also allows me to use art to make a positive impact on both individuals and the broader community.
