What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my drive and success to a lifelong habit of reflecting on my experiences and behaviors. By taking time to understand myself and others, I’ve been able to continually improve, adapt, and grow in both my personal and professional life. This reflective practice has shaped the way I lead, teach, and mentor, allowing me to create meaningful impact in the field of special education.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
As long as you always focus on the needs of the students, you will be fine!
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
None of us do this work alone! Collaboration, teaming, sharing and developing relationships leads to continuous improvement.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Throughout my career, I’ve faced challenges that required resilience and self-reliance. Escaping an abusive situation and rebuilding my life opened my eyes to the pervasive issue of financial abuse, which I hadn’t fully understood until my own experience. Navigating these personal obstacles, along with systemic challenges in the legal system and societal disregard for women, has fueled my desire to advocate for change and support others facing similar hardships. Networking, mentorship, and building strong support systems have been essential to overcoming adversity and continuing my work effectively.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I am deeply committed to addressing leadership challenges and ensuring compliance with federal laws, as seen in the complexities of recent issues in Texas. My professional focus is grounded in advocating for women’s leadership and creating pathways for equitable opportunities, while staying informed about scientific and technological advancements that impact education, health, and overall well-being.
