Her Story

About Mary Jane

Mary Jane Rodriguez-Harrison is the Director of Dining Services at Manor House Assisted Living and Memory Care in the Greater Richmond Region of Virginia, where she oversees all aspects of food service operations for residents in assisted living and memory care. In her role, she is responsible for ensuring that meals meet dietary requirements, departmental policies are followed, and residents receive high-quality, nutritious, and appealing food. She also manages staff schedules, budget planning, and compliance with food safety standards, while maintaining her Serve Safe certification. Known for her hands-on leadership style, she regularly rounds the facility to ensure smooth operations and a positive dining experience for residents.

She brings nearly three decades of experience in dining services, with a career path that reflects steady advancement and dedication to the field. She began her journey working in kitchens as a teenager in the Bronx, New York, inspired and mentored by her aunt who worked in senior dining services. Over time, she progressed from dining services associate to cook, then supervisor and manager, eventually serving as Dining Services Manager at Hanover Health and Rehabilitation for 11 years. Prior to her current position, she also spent nine years at Bon Secours Memorial Regional, building extensive experience in healthcare and long-term care food service environments.

Her professional approach is centered on compassion, resident satisfaction, and creating meaningful daily experiences through food and engagement. She is deeply committed to making residents feel valued, often incorporating themed events, activities, and celebrations into dining services to enhance quality of life. She also supports staff development by encouraging creativity in menu planning and presentation, ensuring meals are both nutritious and visually appealing. Outside of work, she values family life and enjoys spending time with her husband and loved ones, reflecting the same warmth and dedication she brings to her professional role.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mary Jane

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the compassion I have for the residents I serve. Having experienced firsthand, through my parents’ time in a nursing home, how important attentive care and emotional support are, I made it my mission to ensure my residents feel valued, engaged, and never forgotten. I focus not only on meeting their daily needs but also on creating meaningful moments through celebrations, activities, and personal interactions that bring them joy and dignity. My career growth—from dining services associate to cook, supervisor, manager, and now director—has been guided by this same commitment to compassionate, resident-centered care.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to treat people the way I would want to be treated. I’ve learned that many people are not necessarily looking to complain—they simply want to be heard and have their concerns acknowledged. This perspective has shaped how I approach both residents and colleagues, ensuring that I take the time to listen, understand their needs, and respond with empathy and respect.
