MaryKate Higginbotham

Hydrologist
Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma
Hugo, OK 74743

MaryKate Higginbotham is a dedicated hydrologist currently serving the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, where she is the first woman to hold this position for a tribal nation. In her role, she is building a comprehensive hydrology program that monitors groundwater and surface water across tribal lands and ensures compliance with tribal–state water settlement agreements. Her work focuses on aquatic nuisance species monitoring, cyanotoxins and harmful algal blooms, nutrient cycling in reservoirs, and general water quality testing, with the goal of safeguarding safe, clean water for current and future generations.

Before joining the Choctaw Nation in 2025, MaryKate worked with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Fort Worth, Texas, where she contributed to projects involving aquatic nuisance species like zebra mussels, coastal benthic macroinvertebrate studies, and groundwater monitoring. She began her hydrology career while still in college and quickly gained experience in field sampling, laboratory analysis, and hydrologic modeling, including HEC-RAS and RiverWare. MaryKate’s early exposure to the outdoors and her studies in fish biology and aquatic ecology at Oklahoma State University instilled in her a lifelong passion for aquatic habitats, biodiversity, and stream health.

Beyond her professional work, MaryKate is committed to community engagement and education. She volunteers with the tribe to support elders, conducts educational outreach, and promotes environmental stewardship. Inspired by mentors like Shana Mashburn, Karen Hickman, and her late mother Lisa Higginbotham, she emphasizes scientific integrity, unbiased analysis, and mentorship for the next generation of scientists. Outside of work, she enjoys camping, paddleboarding, hiking, and “herping,” reflecting her deep connection to nature and the environment she protects.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to growing up in a state rich with natural beauty, which instilled in me a deep sense of pride and appreciation for my surroundings. Being raised in environments with abundant water resources, along with receiving consistent encouragement, shaped my perspective and resilience. Coming from a family of strong, self-advocating women also had a profound impact, providing me with examples of how to assert myself. I like to believe that this foundation has been invaluable in advocating for myself as a woman in STEM.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is that the glass ceiling doesn’t exist—you define your own limits. I was encouraged to always speak up for myself, advocate for my ideas, and make sure my voice is heard. Embracing this mindset has empowered me to pursue opportunities confidently and set my own standards for success.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering STEM is simple: you belong here. You deserve your place just as much as anyone else, and the work you do is meaningful and impactful. Believe in yourself, embrace your abilities, and know that you are fully capable of succeeding in this field.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges—and simultaneously an opportunity—in my field is learning how to advocate for myself and confidently speak up in a male-dominated environment. Navigating this dynamic has strengthened my communication and leadership skills, and it underscores the importance of creating inclusive spaces where diverse voices are heard and valued.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are dedication and honesty. I strive to give my best in everything I do, and I believe in being transparent and truthful in all my interactions. These principles guide my decisions, shape my relationships, and drive me to maintain integrity in every aspect of my life.
