Her Story

About Maureen

Maureen Whitsett is an author, speaker, and publisher based in Windsor Mill, Maryland, whose life and work are rooted in faith, resilience, and the transformative power of forgiveness. After dedicating 18 years to the U.S. Department of State — where she served as a Human Resources Specialist and Supervisory Management Analyst — she retired in 2021 having spent nearly a decade building and managing the agency's department-wide mentoring program. In that role, she single-handedly designed the program from the ground up, facilitating approximately 80 mentoring matches and collaborating with other government agencies on program development, leaving behind a meaningful legacy of professional connection and growth.

Following her retirement, Maureen channeled her lifelong passion for storytelling and service into a new chapter as an independent author and publisher. She founded her own one-woman publishing company, through which she mentors aspiring writers and guides them through the publishing process — carrying forward the same nurturing spirit that defined her government career. Her debut book, I Beat the Odds: There's Hope and Healing for You, stands as a courageous testament to her personal journey as a three-time suicide survivor, offering readers a message of hope, restoration, and the healing that becomes possible through faith and forgiveness. She is currently at work on her second book while continuing to grow her publishing platform and her unpaid mentoring initiative, Amazing Women Mentoring, which she created to support women in discovering and sharing their own stories.

Maureen's path has been shaped not only by professional accomplishment but by lived experience, spiritual grounding, and the guidance of mentors who walked alongside her during her most challenging seasons. Though her formal education includes coursework at Howard University and certificates in computer software, she considers her most profound credentials to be her healing journey and her unwavering faith. Honored as a featured member of Influential Women in 2026, Maureen continues to inspire others through her writing, speaking, and coaching — reminding women everywhere that no matter what they have endured, healing is not only possible, it is waiting for them.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Maureen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my faith in God, the practice of forgiveness, and the ongoing work of healing in my own life. Perseverance, hard work, and attention to detail have also been essential, as has the encouragement of mentors who believed in me — most notably Bruce Cole, who provided emotional support during some of my most difficult seasons and served as a father figure throughout my journey.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Go for it — do not let fear or uncertainty hold you back. Seek out someone who can walk alongside you, whether that is a writing buddy, a coach, or a mentor. Find someone who will support you through the process and help you discover the story that is already within you, rather than simply telling you what to write. The journey of writing is also a journey of self-discovery, and you do not have to take it alone.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges is simply getting started — building a client base as a new publishing business while managing personal financial constraints as a retiree entering a new venture. However, I also see tremendous opportunity. There is a real need for mentorship in the writing and publishing space, and I am in a position to walk alongside other authors as they find their voices. As my platform continues to grow, so does my ability to publish more books and expand my reach and impact.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Forgiveness is at the center of everything I do — it is what set me free and what I encourage in every woman I work with. Faith in God, compassion for others, perseverance through adversity, and authenticity are the values that guide both my personal life and my professional work. I believe that healing is possible for everyone, and I carry that conviction into every book I write, every author I mentor, and every stage I speak from.
