About Maya
I started my career journey right after completing my education at Prairie View A&M University, where I earned both my Bachelor's and Master's of Science in Accounting between 2020 and 2025. I completed my master's degree in just one year while working full-time and attending classes on Saturdays. My first position was at H&R Block, then I moved to Wood Forest National Bank where I worked Saturdays while still in school, and I took a three-month contract position at Halliburton, which was my first accounting associate job at a big company and a huge learning opportunity. Now I'm back at H&R Block for my second season. In my current role, I work with clients every hour from 8:30 to 5, processing tax returns and handling all types of tax forms including W-2s, 1099s, 1095s, and 1098s, always working to get my clients the highest legal return possible. I'm actively looking for the next step in my career path as I work toward getting my CPA certification. I plan to take a six-month break after finishing my master's before I start sitting for the CPA exam. Coming from Acres Home on the north side of Houston, where only 3% of the community has a master's degree, I'm proud to be part of that small percentage and to have achieved two degrees from an area that's not the best to be from.
