Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mayra

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute much of my success to having an exceptional mentor throughout my career. One of my former leaders taught me that no matter your title or level of success—even if you are a CEO—everyone needs a mentor. I have been fortunate to have someone who has guided me professionally and personally, offering wisdom, encouragement, and perspective throughout my journey. Lilia Alvarado has been more than a mentor to me; she has been like a big sister whose experience and support have helped shape both my career and my personal growth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is that everyone needs a mentor, regardless of how successful they become. No matter how high you climb professionally, there is always something new to learn and someone who can help you grow. I have embraced the importance of seeking guidance, remaining teachable, and surrounding myself with experienced individuals who challenge and inspire me to become a better leader.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to take the leap, even when you feel uncertain or afraid. Growth often comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone, but it is also important to have a thoughtful backup plan while pursuing new opportunities. Build a strong professional network, use platforms like LinkedIn to create meaningful relationships, and never stop learning from others. Most importantly, choose a career that aligns with your personal values, goals, and passions. For me, education has always been deeply meaningful, and I believe your work should allow you to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Transitioning from corporate America to the nonprofit sector has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. While the nonprofit environment presents unique challenges and operates very differently from the corporate world, it has also provided tremendous opportunities for personal and professional growth. The experience has been both humbling and fulfilling, allowing me to develop new skills while contributing to an organization whose mission aligns closely with my personal values.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I believe in the importance of setting clear goals and aligning them at every level—personal, team, and organizational. Visualizing goals helps transform aspirations into achievable outcomes and keeps everyone focused on a shared purpose. Equally important is ensuring that my career aligns with my personal values. For me, education is a lifelong passion, and knowing that my work contributes to creating opportunities for students and strengthening communities gives my career meaningful purpose every day.
