Her Story
About Mayrett
I have been in project management for over 10 years, and my journey has been one of evolution and growth. I'm originally from the Dominican Republic, where I started in international business. I fell in love with international development and began working with the country's investment and export official agency. From there, I moved into working with the European Union through Caribbean Export, focusing on promotion and foreign direct investment between countries as part of a regional project. My work has changed over the years, but it has always focused on project management while leaning into international development. Now I feel like I've merged or grown into marketing as well. Currently, I work with Virtual Assist USA, where I have a couple of clients in project management for vacation rental companies, handling back office operations. I also work with speakers, helping to get them organized and making their lives easier. My typical workday involves jumping between clients and focusing on back office support to make their operations run as smoothly as possible.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I understand that it's hard to know what you want to do for the rest of your life when you're very young, but at the same time, you gotta keep an open mind, because you never know where you're gonna end up. That means not thinking that a field is not good enough for you, or that you're never gonna get there. Especially when you are growing up, whether you're choosing a career or whether you're starting your career, I feel like you need to have a very open mind, and you never know who's gonna give you a lesson. You never know who's gonna be there for you, and you never know, like, even someone who cleans can help you understand something better, or can help you learn something, or a new aspect. So I would say to keep an open mind is a big lesson. When it comes to overcoming challenges in project management specifically, I would say try to understand what you're facing, either the project, or the problem, or the issue that you're facing. Try to get as much information as possible. And at the same time, if you're able to, try to ask away before jumping into conclusions or trying to develop something, because especially being a young professional, you're not going to have all the tools or all the answers right away, but try to get the most information you're able to, and yeah, ask away and try to get it done.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I would say trying to keep everyone happy. I basically have to try to keep my day as organized as possible, and at the same time, trying to understand that other departments have other needs that also need to be respected, and they also need certain times. I feel like the best way to describe that would be a balance between my personal life and trying not to let my work life get into my personal life. It's also a balance between my coworkers and my clients. I would say that balance would be a key word for me.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I would say honesty is very important to me. I try to keep honest and stick to myself, always trying to be upfront with the people that I work with. I also try to find positions that I can grow in, that can help me grow not only professionally, but also personally. That's something that I look forward to every time that I take a new opportunity. I always like to help others, so I feel like every time I look into a new opportunity or something that I'm working on right now, I always try to see it as, how can I help this person, how can I help this company, and how does that also benefit myself, whether it's a new situation that would help me know new things and try to understand, and also how I can make other people's lives easier. Outside of work, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is huge for me, whether it's going to the gym, or taking a class, or going for a walk. I've also been reading a lot as I try to have a life outside of work. I keep studying my languages because I can speak four languages, and it's so easy to forget when you learn them, so that's part of my hobbies for sure.
