Her Story

About Maysoon

I'm the founder of Sisters of Sabr, an organization dedicated to supporting Muslim women through faith, growth, and community. I studied psychology as an undergrad and participated in two leadership programs that really shaped my understanding of community building and using my strengths to meet real needs. After I graduated and had my son, I went through postpartum and realized how much support I needed, which pushed me to finally start the organization I had been thinking about for a year. I began by finding women in my circle who shared my passion for building a community around faith and sisterhood, and now we have a whole team of women who are experts in their fields. We focus on reflection events where we read the Qur'an and discuss how to improve ourselves, wellness education that integrates faith and health, and community gatherings like our upcoming Ramadan event. Sisters from different cities and states have reached out to thank me for building this community because they've been searching for something like this. My vision includes creating personalized care packages for women and children, opening a scholarship foundation focused on education and financial literacy, establishing a homeless shelter that emphasizes education, and sponsoring an orphanage. Everything I do is centered on providing support, education, and recognition for Muslim women who often aren't seen. I've been in leadership for over 6 years now.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges I'm facing right now are learning how to actually build a nonprofit - all the legal side of it - and figuring out the exposure side to make sure women know this community exists. You can do as much research as you want, but when you start doing it, you realize there's so much to learn about how to market, how to fundraise, and how to build that trust within a community. And then there's the whole aspect of how do you expose the organization so more people know about it. Those are the main routes I'm navigating right now.
