Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mckennah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the relationships I have built throughout my career, my ability to treat everyone with respect, and the mentors who have encouraged me to believe in myself. Early in my healthcare career, I noticed tension among different groups of staff, so I made a conscious effort to build positive relationships across every level of the organization, from janitorial and support staff to nurses and physicians. I made it a priority to greet people, learn their names, listen to them, and treat everyone with the same level of kindness and respect. Over time, those small actions created a positive ripple effect, as others began adopting the same approach, and my efforts were ultimately recognized through an award. I also credit my high school basketball coach, Michelle Britton-Watts, with having a profound influence on my life. She encouraged me to participate in sports, including volleyball, despite a childhood blood disorder that had previously prevented me from playing, and she became an important mentor and role model, especially after I experienced the loss of my parents. Her encouragement taught me the importance of perseverance and believing that challenges do not have to define my future. When I encountered obstacles pursuing nursing, I continued moving forward by earning my phlebotomy certification through National College and completing an externship, even though layoffs prevented me from securing a position with IU Health at that time. These experiences taught me to remain resilient, build meaningful connections, and continue pursuing opportunities to grow and serve others, regardless of the obstacles I encounter.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are compassion, resilience, integrity, service, and the willingness to help others. Losing my parents at the age of 16 shaped my perspective on life and taught me to appreciate the importance of showing up for people, especially during difficult moments. I carried those values into my five years as a preschool teacher at a church, my work as a pharmacy technician with CVS and Express Scripts, and my experience as a volleyball coach, where I focused not only on developing young athletes’ skills but also on teaching character, teamwork, discipline, and confidence. Throughout my career, I have also valued initiative and accountability. While working with SelectRx, I recognized gaps in existing processes and took the initiative to develop a mock standard operating procedure and help train employees, which received positive feedback from my supervisor. Later, I earned my Class A CDL, worked as a FedEx contractor, purchased my own truck, and transitioned into RV transport, where I was able to earn approximately $1,000 per day. Although I eventually sold my truck and returned to traditional employment after becoming engaged and expecting a child, that experience reinforced my belief in hard work, independence, and adaptability. When I joined Riley Children’s Hospital, I willingly accepted a significant pay cut because I wanted the opportunity to give back to an organization that had supported both me and my daughter as patients. Receiving the Safety Prevention Award at Riley was especially meaningful because it affirmed that my commitment to safety, service, and making a positive difference in the lives of others was having an impact.
