Meagan Nickerson serves as a supervisor in claims and operational leader at VSA Insurance Group in Peoria, Arizona. She joined the organization in 2009 and has spent 17 years advancing through multiple roles, including service leadership and claims supervision for the past four years. In her current position, she leads a team of 15 auto adjusters while also managing video editing projects, facilitating mental health employee resource group content, planning events for over 500 employees, and supporting initiatives such as AI adoption awareness campaigns and a podcast called Voice of the Member. Nickerson created the Mindful ERG in 2022, which launched with 800 monthly attendees and has influenced organizational approaches to mental health, including psychological safety questions and training courses. She is four classes away from completing her business leadership degree and volunteers with Soldier's Best Friend, St. Mary's Food Bank, and the Peoria Unified School District Business Advisory Board, where she contributes to workforce readiness programs. Nickerson attributes her success to her parents' innovation and resilience, her own grit, and the support of her husband and family. She values a people-first approach in leadership and advises young women entering the industry to listen to their gut, seek mentors, pursue continual growth, and collaborate with peers who inspire development.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Meagan

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success comes from my parents who were innovative and resilient despite challenges, my own grit, and a supportive husband and family that allows me to pursue my goals while balancing a busy schedule.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't apologize for doing the work. This advice from a retiring director empowered me to pursue initiatives without worrying about stepping on toes, as long as the work helps others and aligns with core beliefs.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Listen to your gut, seek wonderful mentors, maintain a thirst for knowledge and continual growth, pay attention to those around you, collaborate with successful peers, and surround yourself with people who value growth and inspire you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The soft insurance market due to Gen Z preferences for gig economy over vehicle ownership, rising insurance rates, and industry disruption from changing transportation habits and increased living costs. Opportunity in commercial insurance and adapting to AI.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

People first. Prioritizing understanding employees' personal challenges over immediate corrective action, providing support and training to help them succeed, fostering belonging and purpose.
