Her Story

About Megan

Megan Broderick is a licensed mental health provider with 15 years of experience currently serving as the Director of Counseling at a private independent college prep school. In this role, she runs all health and well-being programs for students, provides one-on-one counseling, mentors high schoolers throughout their four years, and leads a monthly parent education series. Prior to her career change, Broderick worked as a talent booker for The Ellen DeGeneres Show in Hollywood before pursuing a master's degree in marriage and family therapy at the University of San Diego, graduating in 2011 after earning her bachelor's from Wake Forest University in 2002. She also founded Counseled by BG approximately 18 months ago, a parent education business focused on working parents of adolescents that delivers sessions through corporate HR partnerships. Additionally, Broderick volunteers at Donovan State Prison in San Diego, working with incarcerated men serving life without parole sentences on mental health awareness initiatives, including an upcoming event. Her path reflects a shift from entertainment to helping others, driven by personal family experiences and a desire to support adolescents, parents, and underserved populations.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Megan

01What do you attribute your success to?

My drive comes from caring about stuff and knowing that I can do it. Both my parents were very driven. I had a dad who told me I could do anything I wanted. Also inspired by a female boss at Ellen who showed you can do it all.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

You don't have to have experienced exactly what your client is going through to care about them and be empathetic. You just have to sit with people and show them humanity.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It is the most rewarding though difficult. There's a lot of job security. It takes time but it's worth it. Listen to your heart if you feel a pull to pursue something else.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Helping young people gain perspective amid impulsivity and youth mental health crisis. Balancing validation with building resilience. Responsibility in delicate parts of young people's journeys.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I really love to have fun. I love to try new things. Value being kind and trying to understand where someone else is coming from. Value empathy and kindness. Value laughing and spending time with people you care about. Be humble about what a great life I have.
