Megan Flaherty
Megan Flaherty is an accomplished educational leader with more than 15 years of experience spanning special education, restorative practices, and school administration. She currently serves as an Assistant Principal with the Penn-Trafford School District, where she supports a high school building alongside the principal and a fellow assistant principal. In this role, Megan focuses on student communication and behavior management, classroom observation and teacher support, placement and truancy oversight, and maintaining a strong daily presence in hallways and classrooms to ensure both students and staff feel supported.
Megan began her career as a special education teacher, inspired by her early experiences supporting a family member with autism. After earning her bachelor’s degree from Robert Morris University and a master’s degree in education, she gained experience as a long-term substitute and educator in Virginia before returning to the Pittsburgh area. She spent nearly a decade working exclusively with students with disabilities, including nine and a half years at Pressley Ridge, where she supervised programs across three school districts, led a team of 22 staff members, and implemented academic and behavioral systems aligned with district goals. She later transitioned into public-school leadership at Wilkinsburg School District, continuing her commitment to equity, teacher development, and student-centered systems.
Currently a doctoral candidate at Point Park University, Megan is completing her dissertation on culturally responsive teaching practices for students receiving Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports, with anticipated completion in March. Her professional philosophy centers on restorative practices, honesty, and open communication, with a strong emphasis on understanding the “why” behind student behavior. Outside of work, Megan is a proud single mother to five-year-old twin boys and spends much of her time supporting their activities. She enjoys traveling with her family—especially cruising—and hopes to one day visit Iceland to see the Northern Lights.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the example set by my parents, who instilled in me the values of hard work and commitment. Their unwavering support has been a strong foundation throughout my journey and has played a significant role in my achievements.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to break the ceiling. Perfect your craft, believe in your abilities, and don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t do. Pursue your goals with confidence and determination—and as you rise, lift others up rather than tearing them down on your way forward.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge I face right now is finding the right balance between my personal life—especially raising my children—and remaining highly engaged in my career. At the same time, a meaningful opportunity lies in being part of my district, where I am able to make a real and lasting difference through my work.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty and open communication. I believe trust is built through transparency, and strong relationships—professional and personal—are sustained by clear, respectful dialogue.
