Her Story

About Megan

Megan Salser is the Director of Business Office, ASC Business Office Operations at her organization, where she has worked for 21 years. She began her career in frontline clinic work, rooming patients, with initial plans to pursue nursing that were delayed by the birth of her son. After returning to school when her son was about three years old, she earned a bachelor's degree in human services or social work and spent several years in case management before moving into leadership roles to drive change for frontline teams. In her current position, she oversees three ambulatory surgery centers and clinic surgery schedulers, handling financial operations such as case costing, scheduling, anesthesia support, materials management, and supply chain. She is a member of OrthoForum and developed a notable low-cost joint replacement preparation program in partnership with the YMCA and a local college, offering a 12-week water aerobics and counseling initiative for under $200 to help patients meet BMI requirements for surgery. Salser attributes her success to a strong work ethic, a supportive team and family, and the drive to pursue long-term goals without giving up. She values open communication, placing family first, and fostering team growth while navigating the fast-changing healthcare landscape, including payer dynamics and emerging technologies like AI.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Megan

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my work ethic and working hard. I've had a great team around me to help support me and a family that's supported me through it all. You have to have that drive and that want, and you have to see the end goal a little bit. Like, what are you working towards? And just keep striving to get there. Don't give up.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is to think slow to go fast from our lean process improvement, which means slowing down and really looking at root causes and how to improve efficiencies. Also, don't ever give up. If you have a goal, put your mind to it and you can make it happen. Where I started and where I am today shows that's very true.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do your research, make sure you have a passion to lead. There's so many different things within healthcare. Any person with a drive to want to give back and help individuals can find roles, whether frontline or leadership. Don't give up, keep working towards that goal. Find a good mentor. I've had a couple great ones along the way.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Healthcare is constantly shifting with payer groups and contracting and how we deliver care to our patients with different platforms. It's moving so fast with AI coming into play. It's a challenge but also an opportunity. Keeping yourself up to date with all of those changes in the healthcare climate.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being open and communicating well. Family always comes first. If you put your family first and achieve things outside of work, you're happier when you're at work. Continuing to grow and grow my team are huge.
