Her Story
About Megan
I've been working in the construction field for 8 years, with my main area of expertise being project management. My day-to-day responsibilities include managing project activities from estimation to closeout, overseeing budgets, and leading field teams to ensure everything runs smoothly among all stakeholders, including owners and our internal teams. I work on commercial projects, and right now my focus is on healthcare construction. What I'm working on currently represents my most notable professional achievements - large-scale, ground-up medical office buildings that are new builds, which have been an amazing new experience for me, seeing something really from the ground up that I've been a part of from the start. Another significant project was the West Virginia University Children's Hospital, a ground-up 10-story new build that I joined about halfway through. While I didn't see it from start to finish, it was still a huge honor to be part of that project. I used to do retail construction, which was a good learning experience, but the healthcare side is extremely fulfilling because of who the end users are and knowing we're helping everybody.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Megan
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to myself, wanting to always learn how to do something better. I always wanted to better myself. I've also had a really strong support system, whether it's my personal support system or my work support system. I've always been pretty blessed with the people around me, so if I didn't have all of those factors, I would definitely be in a much different spot than I am today.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
There is a solution for everything.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say don't be nervous, and keep yourself an open book to learning new experiences, because you are going to learn something new every single day. Don't be afraid of that.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Overcoming certain stigmas is a challenge. Being a marginalized section of this industry, I work with a lot of men, and I need to make sure they know I deserve a spot at the table as well as they do. Another challenge is not knowing as much as some of the older people in the industry. Sometimes I get a little intimidated by that, but then I like to flip the coin and try to learn from their experiences, because they are a wealth of knowledge, and even if I don't know it, they are probably more than willing to show me or teach me.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Transparency, humility, and giving others grace are the values most important to me in my work and personal life.
