Human Resources Manager
Roots Management Group

I had a really poor experience with the HR department at one of my first jobs out of high school when I was going through some issues with my manager, and it really inspired me to get into the field and make a difference for employees. I wanted to be a positive part of a human resources department. I think a lot of HR departments get a really bad rep, like they're the ones that fire people and things like that, so I just wanted to make a positive difference and show that working with HR, we're not the bad guys. We're here to help and support people. Someone working in an HR department, we see people go through some of the most important moments in their careers, and so I like to be that positive piece of a company to help support employees. I'm only [AGE], and I feel like I've done a lot of accomplishments in my career so far, and I know it's from my parents pushing me to get an education.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

My dad, and actually both my parents, really pushed me to furthering my education and going to school, and I think it's been a huge factor of me moving up so quickly. I'm only [AGE], and I feel like I've done a lot of accomplishments in my career so far, and I know it's from them pushing me to get an education.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My current boss always tells us to kill them with kindness, and I think being kind to others is probably a lot more important than a lot of people might think it is in your career. Kill Em With Kindness has been a really inspirational quote for me that I use every day.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say don't give up, and don't be easily intimidated, work hard, and show up every day for yourself.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say the biggest challenge is every day is so different. Policies are always changing, things are always changing in the world, and so I think that can be the biggest struggle, just making sure we're always doing the right thing and following the correct policies. For example, the Department of Labor, there's always changes with how we pay our employees, whether they have to be salaried or hourly, and so I think that's the biggest struggle. It's just the many changes we see every day.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I have two daughters, and so it's really important to me that the work we do today and every day matters, because the next generation is watching. It's really important to me that my daughters see, specifically as women, we're growing up in a world where women are leading teams and building companies and redefining what leadership looks like, so I want them to see that their voices matter.
