Megan Z McCage is Director at Merit Advisors, where she has built an accomplished career spanning more than 20 years. Beginning with the firm as a temporary employee, she advanced through a series of leadership roles by consistently delivering exceptional client service, developing high-performing teams, and driving strategic tax consulting solutions for clients across the energy industry. Today, she oversees property tax operations, cultivates strong client relationships, and leads initiatives that help energy companies navigate complex tax challenges with confidence and precision. Throughout her career, Megan has established herself as a respected leader in the energy sector, an industry where women remain underrepresented in executive leadership. She is recognized for her collaborative leadership style, commitment to professional excellence, and dedication to fostering inclusive workplaces where individuals are empowered to grow and succeed. An active member of the Women in Energy Network (WEN), Megan values the opportunities the organization provides to build meaningful connections, strengthen leadership skills, and encourage more women to pursue and thrive in leadership roles within the energy industry. Megan earned her Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas Woman's University and is a licensed Senior Property Tax Consultant. She attributes her success to a strong work ethic, integrity, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Passionate about mentorship, she is committed to helping the next generation of women leaders build confidence, expand their professional networks, and recognize that talent, dedication, and character are the qualities that define exceptional leadership.

Ten minutes with Megan

01What do you attribute your success to?

I was always taught to work, you know, do the best I can at everything and try my hardest. To grow, you have to put yourself in uncomfortable situations. That's what I constantly remind myself. It's uncomfortable, it's okay, this is the only way I'm going to grow here, you know, at my job. My leaders around me, they also have faith in me, so I want to make them proud. Working hard to make the people who have helped me become me, make them proud, and then just showing up, because I know I can do it, and I know I earned my spot. I just have to quieten that little voice in my head sometimes.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received was to be willing to put myself in uncomfortable situations because that's where real growth happens. That perspective has helped me push past self-doubt, embrace new challenges, and trust that I've earned every opportunity I've been given. I've learned that confidence isn't something you're born with—it's built by taking courageous steps forward, even when the path feels uncertain.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to build strong professional relationships, seek out mentors who will support and challenge you, and never let being the only woman in the room discourage you. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow your confidence, strengthen your leadership skills, and demonstrate your capabilities. Most importantly, trust in your abilities, speak up with confidence, and remember that you have earned your place at every table where important decisions are made.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the energy industry is increasing the representation of women, particularly in leadership positions. At the same time, I see this as one of our greatest opportunities. As more women bring diverse perspectives, collaboration, and innovative thinking to the industry, we have the chance to reshape the future of energy. I hope to see more women step into executive roles, mentor the next generation, and help create workplaces where talent, dedication, and character are the true measures of success.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me in both my professional and personal life are integrity, honesty, open communication, compassion, and grace. I believe authentic leadership starts with treating others with respect, building trust, and fostering meaningful relationships. As a mother, I've learned the importance of flexibility, teamwork, and asking for support when needed. My involvement with Women in Energy Network has reinforced my belief that when we encourage and uplift one another, we build stronger leaders, stronger teams, and a stronger industry.
