Her Story

About Melanie

My professional journey has been shaped by my passion for marketing and my ability to adapt across different industries. I started working at a law firm as a legal assistant while completing my undergraduate degree in business and marketing. I was initially hired part-time when they were looking for someone full-time, and I became the first part-time assistant they ever hired. I proved myself to be as efficient as a full-time assistant, which opened the gateway for them to bring on more part-time people. Because of my efficiency, they brought me into the marketing side of things, where I worked on Google AdWords and wrote scripts for Spanish commercials. After leaving the law firm, I completed my master's program and briefly managed a mental health practice in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I then spent about three years in property management with a boutique company where I was very hands-on with clients. Even though I wasn't in a marketing role, I got to do a lot of the creative work, planning events and working on marketing products. One of my proudest achievements during that time was working with DC Events to bring the National Mistletoe installation to the Tech World Association building in Penn Quarter, which broke numerous records for thousands of people coming out. After three years, I decided to get back into marketing and started my current role at a printer dealership in November last year. Now I focus on driving business for our smaller dealership through content marketing, website management, newsletters, blogs, technology showcases, and working with our sales team on new business development through platforms like HubSpot.

Ten minutes with Melanie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would definitely attribute my success to the way I was raised, 100%.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think that one of the mistakes I've made as I reflect is definitely fear. You just gotta throw yourself into it, because you don't know what will come out of it. I feel like maybe I'd have a different role now if I would have done so, or maybe I would have gotten into this role a lot sooner. I've been a little bit more adventurous and willing to really throw myself into it.
