Melanie Guerra is a Physical Chemistry master’s student at the University of Massachusetts Lowell with a strong academic foundation and a clear vision for her future in science. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a concentration in Forensic Science, certified by the American Chemical Society, along with minors in Physics and Mathematics. Currently pursuing her MS in Physical Chemistry, Melanie plans to continue her academic journey by earning a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, with the long-term goal of working for the FBI in chemistry or ballistics.

As a Graduate Research Assistant in the Bertelsen Research Group, Melanie focuses on electrochemistry and radiochemical separations, investigating chromatographic materials and studying europium using cyclic voltammetry. Her work incorporates advanced analytical techniques such as UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, and she has presented her research at national conferences, including the Separation Science and Technology for Energy Applications conference at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Throughout her academic career, she has received multiple honors and research awards, trained fellow students in laboratory techniques, and gained extensive hands-on experience with a wide range of analytical and materials characterization instruments.

Beyond the laboratory, Melanie is a dedicated leader and community builder. She serves as a Kennedy College of Sciences Ambassador and previously held the role of Vice President for the UMass Lowell Class of 2025. In 2017, she founded BTS Boston ARMY, a large-scale community organization that hosts events for thousands of attendees and leads ongoing philanthropic initiatives. As a first-generation college graduate, Melanie is passionate about mentorship, outreach, and creating inclusive spaces where others can thrive. She continues to balance rigorous research, leadership, and service while inspiring future scientists through her perseverance and commitment to excellence.
