About Melanie

Melanie Gunn is a Social Worker and Author with more than 25 years of experience in human services, social work and student support. She currently serves as a School Social Worker with KIPP Atlanta Schools, where her work includes student services, crisis intervention and working with unhoused youth and families. Her professional background reflects a commitment to helping students navigate personal, educational, and social challenges while providing support within the school environment. Mrs. Gunn earned a Master of Social Work Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and has built her career around social work, student advocacy, and support services. Prior to her current role, she spent 11 years working in Norfolk Public Schools before continuing her career in Atlanta as a School Social Worker. In addition to her work as a School Social Worker, Mrs. Gunn is a newly published author whose memoir, What Love Rebuilt, was released in January 2026. Drawing from her experiences with the foster care system and kinship foster care, she is developing additional resources focused on trauma, including a workbook and children's books inspired by her memoir. Beyond her professional responsibilities, Mrs. Gunn is expanding her work as an author and advocate through plans for speaking engagements, a foster care documentary, and a podcast. Her personal and professional journey has informed her interest in sharing stories of resilience, overcoming trauma, and navigating difficult experiences. Mrs. Gunn attributes her achievements to her faith in God, her family, her education, and her commitment to hard work and perseverance.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success first and foremost to my faith in God. I also credit my family and my education for helping shape who I am and where I am today. I have worked hard throughout my journey and have remained committed to the grind, while maintaining the grit, and perseverance necessary to keep moving forward.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The advise I would give to young women entering my industry is that Education, Social work and human services is not for the faint of heart. It's heart work.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Some of the biggest challenges in my field right now is the need outweighs the resources. Some of the biggest opportunities in my field right now is being the change we want to see.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are my faith in God first and foremost and to always do my best to do what's in the best interest of children, scholars and families.
