Her Interview
Ten minutes with Melanie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success largely to the mentors who have supported and guided me throughout my career, particularly my major professors, who played a pivotal role in shaping the person and professional I am today. During my time in college, I was fortunate to have mentors who believed in my potential and provided me with opportunities I never could have imagined when I first began my academic journey. I also credit my continued growth to my previous managers, who consistently inspired me to become the best version of myself. From them, I learned not only valuable industry knowledge but also how to lead effectively, manage with purpose, and support the growth and success of others.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the animal nutrition industry is to remain true to yourself, stay strong, and persevere, even when the path becomes challenging. While persistence may sound cliché, I have found that committing to your goals and continuing to move forward can make all the difference. Throughout my career, I have encountered resistance and obstacles, but believing in myself, maintaining a desire to do meaningful work, and striving to be a positive influence on the people around me have helped me continue to grow. I also believe that hard work is ultimately recognized and rewarded, even if it takes time. The effort you put into anything you pursue is reflected in the results you achieve, and that mindset is a lesson I first learned during my college sorority experience and have carried with me throughout my professional life.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the animal nutrition industry today is maintaining transparency and clarity while ensuring that animal welfare and nutritional needs remain the highest priorities. The industry must also navigate the growing amount of misinformation and the influence of individuals who may be followed more readily than science-backed experts and research. At the same time, there are significant opportunities to strengthen the connection between scientific knowledge, education, and practical industry application. While sales professionals and boots-on-the-ground representatives remain essential to agriculture, there is also a growing need for experts with strong backgrounds in animal nutrition who can provide credible technical guidance and educational support. I believe one of the greatest gaps in the industry is ensuring that companies and consumers understand what is truly required to develop and deliver high-quality products, and that creates an important opportunity for knowledgeable professionals to help bridge the gap between science, manufacturing, and practical animal care.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, accountability, collaboration, and open-mindedness are the values that are most important to me in both my professional and personal life. I believe integrity is essential to building trust and applies to every aspect of my work, from product integrity and quality to taking ownership of my responsibilities and holding myself accountable for my decisions. Collaboration is equally important because meaningful ideas and successful product development are rarely achieved in isolation; they are the result of bringing together diverse perspectives and working toward a shared goal. I also value remaining open-minded and willing to listen to others, recognizing that every person has unique insights and experiences to contribute. By fostering trust, accountability, teamwork, and collaboration, I strive to build strong relationships and contribute positively to the people and organizations around me.
