Her Story

About Melanie

Melanie Kregg has been working in design engineering and product design at Newell Brands since 2018. She graduated from Purdue University in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. During her time at the company, she designed the Squishies product, a novel item for the business that required her to quickly adapt and develop new skills, including creating standard operating procedures for future use. She also applied for a utility patent related to this work. Kregg previously held memberships in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers, though these have lapsed. She attributes her success to opportunities provided by teachers and parents, combined with her own hard work. In her professional life, she values integrity, humility, and transparency. Kregg advises young women entering male-dominated fields to stand their ground, pursue their passions, and not be afraid to ask questions.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melanie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think just the opportunities that I've been given. Obviously, I've had to work hard... I had teachers that gave me opportunities... my parents who tried to take every opportunity they could to help me explore those interests.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Always try and anticipate the questions that will be asked of you. When you come in prepared it shows insight and leads to more productive conversations and agility

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If there's something you want to do, don't let anybody make you feel like you can't do it. Stand your ground, especially for females that try to get into male-dominated fields... don't be afraid to ask questions.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The changing climate... always having to adapt... the fast pace. Typically with consumer products, there's a very quick turnaround... adjusting to a quick timeline and learning how to be more agile.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity... humility... transparency... honesty and transparency are paramount.
